When planning your first wedding, you may have found yourself wondering what is traditional wedding food? Are there any rules when it comes to feeding your wedding guests?
Well, you know us, we’re always going to say that when it comes to wedding food, anything goes! It’s important to make choices that are perfect for you and your guests and there are a whole host of options to choose from.
Traditionally, UK wedding food would take the form of a sit down three course meal which is referred to as the wedding breakfast. People often choose to go for a seafood starter, meat main course (with vegetarian or vegan option) and then a nice pudding and coffee to finish. However, there’s nothing to say that you have to do the same.
Choosing a sit down meal that works for you
The great thing about a sit down dinner is that it can be personalised to suit your tastes. You may choose to incorporate a variety of dishes which represent your family heritage, or, if you would like a purely vegetarian or vegan wedding breakfast then the options are endless there, too. It could be that many of your guests have food allergies, or intolerances so you may wish to choose a wedding menu which accommodates these.
Another consideration is the location of the wedding (whether it’s indoors or outdoors, for example) and the time of year at which it is being held. Just remember, that nothing should be set in stone when it comes to choosing the right wedding food to help make your day extra special.
Having a banging buffet
If a sit down meal of several courses doesn’t sound right for your wedding, then another traditional wedding food option is to have a buffet. The sort of food that could be included in your buffet wedding catering could include the following:
- Selection of cold and hot meats and cheeses
- Variety of fresh salads
- Crunchy seasonal vegetables
- Mini sausage rolls and quiches
- Garlic bread and French bread
- Pickles and chutneys
- Home made coleslaw and potato salad
- Pasta dishes
- Mini hamburgers and pizzas
- Kebabs, burritos and fajitas
- Sushi and other seafood
To be honest, we could go on all day about the type of food you could include in a wedding buffet. The list really is never ending so it’s important to have a good chat with us about the type of wedding food which would really float your boat.
What to consider when choosing a buffet or sit down meal
As we mentioned before, location, taste and seasonality are important factors when choosing the sort of food that you’ll serve. In addition, you may want to consider the type of experience that you want your guests to have. If you like the thought of people mingling and getting to know each other in the great outdoors, then a buffet or BBQ could be the better option, however, if it’s a winter wedding in a stately venue, then you may feel that a sit down meal is more appropriate.
That’s not to say that the two options aren’t interchangeable. A sit down meal can work wonderfully in a tipi in the middle of the countryside, for example.
